Belarusian National Arts Museum Pop-up Postcard

Marking 1949 as a starting point of the building’s history, we accentuate an important moment: it is remarkable that in the post-war city devasted by heavy destructions they considered art and creating “home” for it the first necessity!

At first it was planned to build the museum in a different spot, although in the neighbourhood – on an elevated site at the intersection of Lenin and Kirov Streets, facing Ulyanovskaya Street, which is not far from the current location. And the initial sketch by the architect Mikhail Baklanov depicted a two-storey mansion with semicircular windows and a light colonnade and a wide staircase with terraces of green lawns…. In the end, however, a much smaller space was allocated along the already built-up Lenin Street. So the young architect worked his magic when he managed to fit in between two other houses a monumental building, the appearance of which evokes associations with ancient temples.
