National Opera and Ballet Theatre Pop-up Postcard

Br19.50

Designed by the famous Soviet Belarusian architect Iosif Langbard, the building of the National Academic Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre is a remarkable monument of the Constructivist architecture. It was constructed at the highest point of pre-war Minsk, the Trinity mountain, and opened its doors to the public in 1939.

In 1941 the aerial bomb damaged the auditorium, but most of the building survived to be used as a stable and storage during the fascist occupation. Mirrors, furniture, carpets, paintings, unique items from theatre props and scenery were taken out to Germany.

The current look is the result of 2006-2009 reconstruction that followed closely the initial vision  by I. Langbard. The novelty is that under the building there is huge space for new mechanisms of the stage, which goes 18 meters deep into the ground.

There are annual premiers, and performances are given in the original language.
