Br15.50

Yanka Kupala National Theatre is the oldest Belarusian theatre. The construction was financed from the donations of citizens. In 1890 it was opened as Minsk provincial theatre. In the early years the best troupes from Moscow and St. Petersburg performed here.

In 1920 a grand opening of the Belarusian State Theatre took place. The troupe of the young theatre  was mostly formed by the members of the “First Society of Belarusian Drama and Comedy”, with Stefaniya Stanyuta among them, a legendary theatre and movie actress.

In 1944 the theater was named after Yanka Kupala, one of the greatest Belarusian-language writers of the 20th century and  a symbol of culture of Belarus during the Soviet era.

In March 2013 a large-scale reconstruction of the building was completed, it returned the original Baroque-style look.
